- Campaign Group Stop Detention Scotland (SDS) to Protest outside Council Planning Meeting on 8th November.
Campaigners plan to hold a demonstration outside the Paisley Council Offices as Councillors meet on 8th November to decide on on the controversial plans to build a new Detention Centre in Paisley. [1] Local campaign group Stop Detention Scotland (SDS) have called the demo amid rising anger and criticism from local people, MPs, councillors and charities.
Stop Detention Scotland plan to hold a visible and loud presence outside the council offices to put pressure on the council to refuse the plan which they argue “has no public approval.” The council received 297 objections by members of public opposing the planning application for the new Detention Centre in just one month.
Jonathan Vaughn, a member of SDS says the centre in Paisley is a disaster for those detained there, “ We are so angry at these plans. We will fight these plans all the way. The council have a duty to respect human rights, and the opinion of the public. The resounding response from the people of Paisley has been, ‘No New Detention Centre’.”
Robina Queresh from Positive Action Housing also criticised the plans, “It will mete out more cruelty with less scrutiny. Worst of all, it will detain whole families and children through the backdoor. This is Westminster at its worst and all done on Scottish soil.”[2]
There are fears the plans are being rushed through by the Home Office after it emerged Councillors and MPs weren’t consulted by the Home Office prior to the planning application or the announcement to close Dungavel Centre.[3] The Planning Board has the option to grant the planning application, or defer it to a Full Council Meeting in December.
